The term " symmetry " can be defined differently. A definition, which is particularly for symmetry investigations at molecules well useful, reads:

A body (a molecule) is symmetrical if one can transfer its sections (atoms, atomic groups) by geometrical operations concerning one level, straight line or one point into one another, without modifying the appearance of the body (molecule). Such geometrical operations are called symmetry operations.
