First the point group of the NH₃ of molecule is to be determined.
We recommend to you to always proceed with the determination of the group of points from a sketch or a model of the molecule. Pursue each step exactly on the basis the algorithm!

1. Type of the axis of rotation:

The NH₃- molecule is neither linear nor cubic. It is however a C₃- axis available, like you surely still from the earlier views at the NH3- molecule knows (see step 113). Thus we are according to the algorithm in the section, in which we have to decide between C , D and S2 point groups. This decision takes place with the help of other symmetry elements, which are to be determined according to the algorithm.
